APS Expands Online Patient Safety Offerings with
Resident Supervision Course
New Interactive Course Provides Both Residents and Attendings with Enhanced Understanding of Communication, Teamwork, and Oversight Challenges
Boston, MA - June 16, 2009 - Advanced Practice Strategies (APS), a leading provider of education solutions for risk management and patient safety, today released a new course designed to reduce medical error by helping residents and attendings interact more effectively.
Highlights
"Both attending physicians and residents face a major challenge in accomplishing the twin goals of training the next generation of doctors through hands-on clinical care and ensuring the safety of their patients but few education and assessment tools exist for some of the most crucial areas of training, including clinical supervision, escalation and handoff protocols, and effective communication. The APS Resident Supervision course fills this void and helps residents and attendings strike the right balance between autonomy and oversight."

Harvard research shows physicians-in-training are highly vulnerable to medical errors that stem from teamwork breakdowns, particularly during patient handoffs. This course, Resident Supervision, focuses on major points of error and outlines several approaches involved in improving both the flow of information and treatment coordination among attendings and residents. Developed in partnership with the Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions, Resident Supervision expands the scope of APS&rquote;s successful risk management and patient safety curriculum, which has educated more than 40,000 clinicians nationwide.
"Both attending physicians and residents face a major challenge in accomplishing the twin goals of training the next generation of doctors through hands-on clinical care and ensuring the safety of their patients," said Dennis Ferrill, CEO of APS. "But, few education and assessment tools exist for some of the most crucial areas of training, including clinical supervision, escalation and handoff protocols, and effective communication. The APS Resident Supervision course fills this void and helps residents and attendings strike the right balance between autonomy and oversight."
Participants taking the course will learn how to:
- Appreciate the role of communications and teamwork in ensuring patient safety and understand the common barriers to both in the hospital setting;
- Develop communication/teamwork skills by implementing effective strategies such as structured communication, assertion, and psychological safety;
- Use a standardized approach and appropriate technology to ensure successful handoffs;
- Relate the goals of safety and training in resident supervision to the respective responsibilities of attending physicians and resident physicians; and
- Identify effective and ineffective behaviors in the attending-resident relationship, including those related to handling disagreements and addressing errors.
